The women's resource center is a "one-stop" gateway for retirement planning.
The Administration on Aging has awarded a 3-year competitive grant to the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER), for the design and execution of a National Education and Resource Center on Women and Retirement Planning. Download a fact sheet from the AoA about the resource center. The Center’s overriding goal is to assist the Aging Network in educating women of all ages about planning for their future financial, health and long-term care needs.”
AoA has posted a warning on www.aoa.gov regarding the Wal-mart scam. It includes some good links to the FTC and Stetson Consumer Protection Project websites as well. Visit the AoA.gov site.
The National Resource Center:
Focuses activities on educational materials that meet the special needs of disadvantaged women and their families, including individuals with limited-English proficiency.
Improves women’s access to basic financial and retirement planning tools that promote financial literacy. A full library of fact sheets are available on topics such as budgeting, saving and investing, understanding retirement plans, long-term care insurance, Social Security, and retiree health.
WISER’s website address is www.wiserwomen.org and the Center’s website can be reached from our homepage. Most of the materials are downloadable and may be printed and distributed to clients or constituents free of charge. Bulk orders are available for a nominal fee. We encourage you to make these materials available to those in your community and to link to our website if possible.
The Center offers train-the-trainer workshops in local communities through partnerships with community-based as well as faith-based groups that reach vulnerable women, the non-profit community, women of color, and caregivers. Groups are provided with training for model interventions that enable them to offer financial and retirement planning in their communities.
We hope that you will partner with us to create access to these tools and resources. If you have any suggestions for collaborations or dissemination of the materials, we would appreciate hearing from you. If you have questions or comments, please email WISER at
or call WISER at (202) 393-5452.
WISER believes that lifetime financial planning is key to reducing the unacceptably high rate of poverty among older women. Women with financial skills and resources live a healthier and more secure life.
The Center is designed to ensure maximum exposure to financial planning tools for populations targeted by the Administration on Aging—in particular, average and low-income, minority, limited-English speaking, rural and other “underserved” women. According to WISER president Cindy Hounsell, the overarching goal of the project is to provide a one-stop gateway to integrate financial information and resources on retirement, health, and long-term planning into programs that are already in existence, such as the programs of the Older Americans Act.
In combating these problems, WISER and the Administration on Aging will promote financial and retirement planning by streamlining access to educational tools that empower women to plan for their future economic security, including vulnerable, isolated and hard-to-reach groups of women. The Center has also formed the “Aging Network Advisory Council,” representing 15 organizations across the country, to promote nationwide outreach on financial education and retirement planning through the formation of strategic partnerships.
