This Month, Be THANKFUL for Caregivers!

    Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

November is National Family Caregiver Month.  WISER along with the National Family Caregiver Association (NFCA) wants to help spread some much needed information about caregiving. Here at WISER, we want to make sure that caregivers are financially prepared. The overwhelming majority of caregivers are females providing unpaid care for loved ones. It is especially important for women who often take time out of the workforce, to plan for retirement and manage finances even when caregiving responsibilities arise. To help you identify financial decisions you may face as a caregiver, read through WISER’s  Financial Steps for Caregivers booklet. And check out our dedicated Caregiving webpage to find special reports, fact sheets and additional information on caregiving and finances.

NFCA is dedicated to educating, supporting and empowering family caregivers. Their website has lots of useful information and they can connect you with people who can help you through the caregiving process. Many family caregivers feel a sense of isolation that can be painful and confusing. They have to face issues that are complicated and they may feel as if they have no one to turn to for help or advice. To help alleviate this problem, NFCA has created the National Family Caregiver Story Project and Pen Pal Program to help family caregivers find solace in the similar stories of fellow family caregivers and find people to reach out to.

When it comes to caregiving, it is important to take care of yourself while taking care of others. Use these resources to learn about caregiving and the issues that you or others you know might face as a caregiver, both emotional and financial, so that we call all be better prepared.
