Guides for “Managing Someone Else’s Money”

The “Managing Someone Else’s Money” guides can help you understand your role as a financial caregiver, also called a fiduciary. Each guide explains your responsibilities as a fiduciary, how to spot financial exploitation, and avoid scams. Each guide also includes a “Where to go for help” section with a list of relevant resources.

These guides are published and made available through the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a U.S. government agency that makes sure banks, lenders, and other financial companies treat you fairly. WISER is pleased to join with the CFPB to share these resources.

The guides are tailored to the needs of people in 4 different fiduciary roles:

Power of attorney

Help for agents under a power of attorney is a guide for those who have been named in a power of attorney to make decisions about money and property for someone else.
Available in Spanish: Ayuda para agentes bajo un poder legal

Court-appointed guardians

Help for court-appointed guardians of property and conservators is a guide for those who have been appointed by a court to be guardians of property or conservators, giving them the duty and the power to make financial decisions on someone’s behalf.
Available in Spanish: Ayuda para los guardianes o tutores de propiedades nombrados por el tribunal

Trustees

Help for trustees under a revocable living trust is a guide for those who have been named as trustees under revocable living trusts.

Government fiduciaries

Help for representative payees and VA fiduciaries is a guide for those who have been appointed by a government agency to manage another person’s income benefits, such as Social Security or Veterans Affairs benefit checks.
